Ingredients

Quantities are shown as originally provided.

  • 6 skinless boneless chicken thighs
  • ¼ cup cornstarch (or potato starch)
  • 1 small onion (diced)
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil (or any neutral oil)
  • 1 green onion (finely chopped for garnishing)
  • 4 1/2 tbsp regular soy sauce (or light soy sauce)
  • 3 1/2 tbsp brown sugar (light or dark brown sugar both work)
  • 3 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 tbsp honey (or light corn syrup )
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (/ potato starch / tapioca starch)
  • 1 cup water (cold)
  • 1 green onion (finely chopped)

Instructions

  1. 1

In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients as listed above and set aside.

  2. 2

Dice the chicken thighs into 1.5-inch cubes and transfer into a large mixing bowl.

  3. 3

Add cornstarch to the diced chicken and toss until evenly coated. Set aside. If needed, feel free to add more cornstarch.

  4. 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan on medium-high heat. Fry the coated chicken in small batches until cooked and golden, about 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway.

  5. 5

Remove and transfer the fried chicken to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.

  6. 6

Reserve 2 tsp (10 mL) of the oil in the pan and discard the rest. Fry the chopped onions and cook until softened, about 1 minute.

  7. 7

Add the sauce and simmer until it's thickened.

  8. 8

Add the fried chicken and toss until evenly coated in the sauce. Garnish with green onions and remove from heat. Enjoy immediately.
