Ingredients

Quantities are shown as originally provided.

  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • ⅓ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ⅓ cup blackstrap molasses
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon tamari soy sauce (or coconut aminos)
  • 2 teaspoons mustard powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: for a little extra kick add a ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce

Instructions

  1. 1

Mix and cook the sauce. In a medium saucepan, add all of the ingredients and whisk together. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer over low heat (note: if your stove temperature is too high, it will splatter). Let it simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until slightly reduced.

  2. 2

Let it cool. Turn off the heat and allow to cool before serving or storing.
