- ½ cup of water
- 2 unpeeled medium blood oranges and thinly sliced
- ½ cup of orange juice
- ½ cup of softened butter
- 1¾ cups of all purpose flour
- 1 tsp of baking powder
- ¼ tsp of salt
- 1¾ cup of white granulated sugar

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180ºC).

Put 1 cup sugar and ½ cup water in a small saucepan. Stir to dissolve the sugar and bring to a boil. It is done when it turns a light golden caramel color.

Pour the caramel into a round cake pan. Place the blood orange slices over top, covering the bottom of the pan completely.

Add half a cup of softened butter to a bowl then add granulated sugar and give it a quick whisk. Add eggs to the bowl and whisk again until the mixture look smooth.

Add half a cup of orange juice. Sift in all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder and whisk until mixture is smooth with no flour lumps remaining.

Pour the mixture over the orange slices. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake for about 30 minutes until the cake is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Remove the cake from the oven, and let it cool for 15 minutes. Use a sharp knife to trim around the edges, then flip the cake upside-down onto a large serving platter or cutting board.
