Ingredients

Quantities are shown as originally provided.

  • 10-12 Chocolate Habanero peppers, stemmed and seeded
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Juice of 1 lime

Instructions

  1. 1

Begin by removing the stems and seeds from the habanero peppers. Make sure to wear gloves to protect your skin from their potent heat

  2. 2

Chop the onion, mince the garlic, and juice the lime

  3. 3

Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and minced garlic, cooking until they're soft and aromatic, about 3-4 minutes

  4. 4

In a blender or food processor, combine the sautéed onions and garlic with the habanero peppers, apple cider vinegar, water, cocoa powder, brown sugar, salt, ground cumin, ground coriander, and lime juice

  5. 5

Blend until the mixture is smooth, scraping down the sides as needed to ensure everything is well incorporated

  6. 6

Pour the blended mixture back into the saucepan and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat

  7. 7

Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired thickness

  8. 8

After tasting the sauce, taste and adjust the seasoning. You can add more salt, sugar, or lime juice as needed to balance the flavors

  9. 9

Take the sauce off the stove and allow it to cool fully after it has reached your desired thickness

  10. 10

Transfer the cooled hot sauce to sterilized glass jars or bottles for storage.
