Ingredients

Quantities are shown as originally provided.

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1/2 onion, (finely diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic, (minced)
  • 1 lb. dry bite-sized pasta ((rigatoni, gemelli, macaroni, penne, bow tie pasta, etc))
  • 2 1/2 cups beef broth (chicken broth okay)
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped parsley
  • Dried chili flakes

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat a large deep skillet or Dutch oven pot over medium-high heat.

  2. 2

Add oil to the skillet and saute diced onions and minced garlic for about 1 minute.

  3. 3

Add ground beef to the pan and cook through, breaking up the ground beef as you mix it with the onions and garlic.

  4. 4

Add the dry pasta, broth, red wine, and water. Mix well and make sure pasta is completely submerged. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan/pot and simmer for about 7-8 minutes, stirring the pasta halfway through.

  5. 5

Uncover the pan/pot and add the tomato paste, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together well.

  6. 6

Continue to simmer uncovered until sauce has reduced and thickened into a sauce that coats all the pasta. If the pasta is not done yet and there is not enough liquid left in the pan, add another 1/2 cup of water or broth, stir well and continue to simmer until done, checking after 5 minutes.

  7. 7

Garnish with grated Parmesan and chopped parsley, if desired. Serve straight from the pan!
