we have discovered a way to easily insure ourselves against the abyss that is the lack of spring onion: we have been growing our own spring onions in a jar!

  • 1 tallish glass jar
  • 3 sprigs spring onion with roots
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

    Prepare jar.

    Rinse spring onions, removing any dead and mushy bits. Cut so that around 2 inches of green are left. Use those cutting for your cooking that day.

    Add spring onions bulbs, roots and those 2 inches of green to jar and add water to cover the bulbs and roots. Put in a semi sunny spot.

    Change water everyday. The spring onion greens will show growth everyday so snip off what you need for cooking. If you remember to change the water the spring onions should keep grwowing for quite a while.
