Hamburger Casserole With Mashed Potatoes
Our homey ground beef casserole is a great choice for a busy family. A meatloaf-like mixture is topped with homemade mashed potatoes and cheese.

Ingredients
Quantities are shown as originally provided.
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs , fine and dry
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 pound ground beef , at least 85% lean
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons onion , minced
- 1 large egg
- 3 cups prepared mashed potatoes, or more
- 3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- Optional: paprika

Gather the ingredients. Heat the oven to 350 F.

In a small bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk.

In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with the bread crumb mixture, along with the salt, pepper, onion, and the beaten egg .

Pat the meat mixture into a 9-inch pie plate. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the ground beef from the oven and carefully pour off the excess fat.

Top the meat with the mashed potatoes; sprinkle with cheese. If desired, sprinkle lightly with paprika.

Return to oven for about 15 minutes longer, or until the cheese is melted and potatoes are thoroughly heated.
